The IEEE Pulp, Paper and Forest Industry Local Conference Committee is pleased to offer tutorial sessions on the industry’s most important technical subjects. Tutorials are presented by industry specialists and attending these sessions can greatly enhance your technical knowledge and skills.
The local committee is encouraging the first time conference attendees who paid full conference registration to participate in tutorials and the fully discounted price shown below for each course.
The National Electrical Code (NEC) 2023 changes
Thursday June 15, 8:00am – 12:00pm (4 hour)
Ryan Walden & Dan Neeser
This half-day tutorial will provide educational instruction on the 2023 NEC code changes impacting electrical engineers and electricians. Fundamental revisions around available fault current, short-circuit current ratings, selective coordination, incident energy and grounding will be covered. Practical instruction for electrical engineers will be presented to increase the likelihood of proper system performance and compliance with the NEC grounding and bonding requirements. The tutorial is formatted for Electrical Engineers of commercial and industrial electrical systems which are governed by the NEC, and is highly recommended as a review supplement for those preparing to take the Electrical P. E. or current P.E.’s that need to fulfill ongoing requirements for continuous education. IEEE Professional Development Hour (PDH) Certificates for 4 hours will be available to all participants after completion of this course.
Introduction to Digital Switchgear
Thursday June 15th, 1:00pm – 4:00pm (4 hour)
Medium voltage (MV) switchgear is a key element of the electrical energy distribution system. The Digital Switchgear concept, for MV distribution, presents many operational advantages and is inherently safe. It is based on the combination of technologies such as current and voltage sensors, IEC 61850 incorporated into modern numerical IEDs and breaker and switchgear condition monitoring sensors. When these technologies are combined in an optimal way the advantages of digital switchgear include increased safety, space, weight and energy savings, flexibility towards changing load flows, the ability to easily handle load changes, quicker delivery times and the possibility of late customization. In this tutorial, we will cover the background and characteristics of Digital Switchgear and contrast it with conventional switchgear. Two key component technologies, current and voltage sensors and IEC 61850 based protection and control will be covered in depth. The practical experiences from the early projects in the field will be presented.
